Maleme is a coastal village 16 kms west of Chania, famous for the heroic battle fought there against the German paratroopers in May 1941. Almost 5,000 German soldiers died here during the battle of Crete and they are burried in the German Cemetery on a hill that overlooks the plain of Maleme.
Maleme nowadays is a tourist resort with very well developed tourist facilities such as hotels, apartments, rooms, taverns, restaurants, bars and shops. Maleme has kept its original Cretan flavor unspoiled from the massive tourist trade, offering an excellent base to organize numerous countryside daily excursions.
A five minute walk from the village brings you to the beach and the wonderful view of Chania Bay, with the virgin Rodopou peninsula to the west, and Chania and the Akrotiri peninsula to the east.
There is frequent bus service from Chania to get you to Maleme. |
