Crete is special to me because it is such a beautiful
mixture of sea, sky and mountains. The people are friendly, the food is
wonderful and the climate is ideal.
Favourite restaurants in Crete: Itanos Restaurant,
Agios Nikolaos - just off the main square with stuffed aubergines to die
for!
Mythos Resaturant, Hersonissos - a bit out of the way, opposite an Irish
bar; it was very busy but really friendly & wonderful food.
Old House, Malia - in the old town with a wonderful roof garden and lovely
food.
Romantic Corner, Stalis - at the western end of Stalis right by the sea.
Very friendly service and again fabulous food.
Hovoli Restaurant, Stalis - the first place we ate and it was lovely.
Really good food and friendly service.
Favourite accommodation in Crete: I have only stayed
in the Eri Studios in Stalis. Very comfortable with a nice pool.
Favourite beach in Crete: A small beach just east
of Malia - it was a bit quieter than the main beaches and well away from
any roads.
You have to see in Crete: Spinalonga Island - we went with Nostos
Tours and had the benefit of a guide. It was a really intersting and enjoyable
visit.
Night Life in Crete: -
Off the beaten path in Crete: -
When in Crete be careful about Getting hassled by
people tring to get you into their bar/restaurant - particularly bad in
Hersonissos.
Transportation: We used the bus and taxis - both
very reliable and reasonably priced. Excellent bus conductors.
Cultural Tips: Learn at least a few words in Greek
and use them. Remeber to slow down and take things as they come.
Favourite Links about Crete: This one!
Additional Comments: The food is out of this world!
Favourites were baked aubergines, feta from the oven, stuffed tomatoes
and kleftiko but everything was delicious. We also developed a real tase
for Raki!
The quality of the fresh fruit & veg was fantastic.
