Car Rental in Crete and Greece
Crete is a big island and the best way to explore it, is by car. Driving your own car from Europe to Crete is possible but it will take you at least 3 days and cost a considerable amount in fuel and ferry costs. Unless you are staying on the island for a considerable time, the most practical option for most will probably be to rent a car on the island.
Today there are hundreds of car rental agencies on Crete with most of them being small, local companies. These usually prove cheaper than the very big and well-known international companies. We suggest that you do a little research and check out the rates that are being offered. You can often find the rates on their websites or by emailing them. Many rental companies have staff who speak a number of languages.
Whoever you hire your vehicle from, check it over before you set off. Pay particular attention to ensuring that you have a serviceable spare tire in the vehicle.
As with any car rental arrangement, it is very important to have the company explain clearly their Terms and Conditions. You should pay particular attention to the various Insurance options so that you will avoid any unpleasant surprises if you are unfortunate enough to have to make a claim.
- To rent a car in Crete and Greece, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Some suppliers have a maximum rental age of 70. Seatbelts are mandatory. Child seats are mandatory for children up to age 4.
- Drivers must have a valid license held for at least one year. An International Driving License is required by Greek Law for all renters that are a not citizen of the European Community or who do not have a European Drivers permit. Driving Licensee in characters not readable in English or Greek must be accompanied by an International Driving License. Common terms usually applicable to insurance cover:
- Fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals.
- Theft Protection Coverage (TPC) is an optional service , TPC insures the renter against liability for the cost of repairing or replacing the rented vehicle and its parts and accessories if stolen or damaged following theft or attempted theft during the rental. If you decide to decline TPC you will be responsible for the cost of the repairing or replacing the vehicle lost or damaged by or following theft attempted theft or vandalism .
- The driver can limit his/her responsibility for his share in any damage of the rented vehicle during the rental period. A residual non-waivable amount will be applied in the event of damage to or loss of the vehicle. The renter is responsible for up to the amount of 440.00 €, the remaining amount will be the responsibility of the Insurance company. Collision Damage Waiver will apply provided collision damages are not due to violations of the Greek Traffic Law. If Collision Damage Waiver is declined the customer will be totally responsible for damage to the vehicle.
- Tickets resulting from any violation of the Greek Traffic law during rental period, is solely the renter's responsibility.
