Born in USA but Now Living in Crete
Name: Rebecca
Country: Born in USA. Now reside in Crete
Crete is special to me because It is filled with so much history and culture. I grew up in the states and was always fascinated with Greek history and especially Crete. My cousin and I always planned to move to Crete one day even though we had never been there. Unfortunately, my cousin passed away before we could ever go to Greece and I had to make the journey for us both. So, I packed up everything I have and moved here to Hania, Crete when I was 19 years old. I had never visited and didn’t know a soul. Am I sorry? Heck no. I love it here. It’s amazing and beautiful and I will never leave except for the occasional visit to the states.
Favourite restaurants in Crete: Polakis tavern in Hania, Myrovolos restaurant in Hania, Minos restaurant in Stalida.
Favourite accommodation in Crete: Palace Hotel in Malia
Favourite beach in Crete: All in Chania district: Elafonissi Lagoon, Falassarna, Menies(ruins of Artemis are here) > see the Beach Guide of Chania
You have to see in Crete: The southern coast is great, the Lasithi Plain, just the whole island is gorgeous. I’m still learning and exploring!
Night Life in Crete: Iraklion…definitely. It’s a great place that goes on all night long! Just walking the streets and talking to people. Greek residents are so friendly and easy to talk to.
Off the beaten path in Crete: I have found that picking a spot on the map, hopping into a car, going to that spot and then walking around and exploring is the best way to go. There is so much to see. You will never get bored.
When in Crete be careful about The drivers! They don’t always pay attention.
Transportation: Renting a car is the best way to go. Busing is good too and taxis are pretty affordable.
Cultural Tips:
- Tell the waiter in the taverna if you are going to be dining alone, otherwise you will be waiting a long time for service!
- Bring a gift to the home of any person that invites you to a meal.
Anything else you would like to add: I just have to rave on and on about Crete and about the whole country of Greece. I have learned so much in the few months that I have been here and wouldn’t trade this for anything in the world. I am so happy and feel so complete and like I’ve finally found my home. Enjoy the country and come back often!!!
